1987 FA Cup Final

The 1987 FA Cup Final took place on 16 May 1987 at Wembley Stadium. It was contested between Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs were appearing in their third final in seven seasons, having won the trophy in 1981 and 1982 and were strong favourites, while unfancied Coventry were appearing in their first ever final after 104 years of trying. Spurs were going for a record eighth victory and had never lost a final. In an exciting match, Coventry eventually triumphed 3–2 after extra time.

It was a clean, good-willed yet well-contested final, with no bookings and high-quality football being produced by both sides. Both teams exercised quick, neat passing ability interspersed with exciting wing play and it was generally considered a good avertisement for English football.

West Midlands conurbation

The West Midlands conurbation is the name given to the large conurbation that includes the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton and the large towns of Dudley, Walsall, West Bromwich, Solihull, Stourbridge, Halesowen and Sutton Coldfield in the English West Midlands.

Not to be confused with the region or metropolitan county of the same name, the conurbation does not include parts of the county such as Coventry, but does include parts of the surrounding counties of Staffordshire (e.g. Little Aston, Perton), Warwickshire (specifically Coleshill and Water Orton) and Worcestershire (Hagley, Hollywood).

Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent is a city in Staffordshire, England, which forms a linear conurbation almost 12 miles (19 km) long, with an area of 36 square miles (93 km²). Together with the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme Stoke forms the The Potteries Urban Area. This, together with the rural Staffordshire Moorlands area, forms North Staffordshire, which in 2001, had a population of 457,165.

The conurbation continues to be polycentric, having been formed by the federation of six originally separate towns and numerous villages in the early-20th century. The settlement from which the federated town (not a city until 1925) took its name was Stoke-upon-Trent, because this was where the administration (and chief mainline railway station) was located. After the union, Hanley emerged as the primary commercial centre in the city, despite the efforts of its rival, Burslem. The three other component towns are Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton.

West Midlands

The West Midlands is an official region of England, covering the western half of the area traditionally known as the Midlands. It contains the second most populous British city, Birmingham, and the larger West Midlands conurbation, which includes the city of Wolverhampton and large towns of Dudley, Solihull, Walsall and West Bromwich. The city of Coventry is also located within the West Midlands county, but is separated from the conurbation to the west by several miles of green belt.

Baginton

Baginton is a village and civil parish in the Warwick district of Warwickshire, England, and has a common border with the City of Coventry of the West Midlands county. Baginton village is four miles (6.5 km) south of Coventry city centre and seven miles (11 km) north of Leamington Spa.

Coventry city

Coventry is a city and metropolitan borough in the county of West Midlands in England. The population of Coventry has risen to 309,800 as of 2008.

Coventry is situated 95 miles ( northwest of London and 19 miles east of Birmingham, and is farthest from the coast of any city in Britain. Although harbouring a population of almost a third of a million inhabitants, Coventry is not amongst the English Core Cities Group due to its proximity to Birmingham.

Coventry University

Coventry University is a post-1992 university in Coventry, West Midlands, England. Under the terms of the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992, the institution's name was changed from Coventry Polytechnic to Coventry University. However, its roots can be traced back to 1843 with the Coventry College of Design.

The university is the first institution in the UK's to offer the disaster management programme.The University's successful and expanding Business School is Coventry University Business School.

Walsgrave-On-Sowe

Walsgrave-On-Sowe in was a village located about 3 miles north-east of Coventry, West MidlandsEngland. It was built on marsh lands, although the city sees very little flooding. However, due to urban growth, it is now an outer suburb of the city, near to Ansty, Shilton and Hinckley. Walsgrave-On-Sowe neighbours the Wood End area and both are in the Henley Ward of the city.

Willenhall

Willenhall is a suburb of Coventry in the West Midlands of England.

Willenhall is in the south-east of the city adjacent to the suburbs of Binley, Ernesford Grange and Whitley. It covers the area bounded by the Rugby to Coventry railway line, the River Sowe and the city's boundary with Warwickshire.

For general election purposes it is part of the Coventry South Constituency and for local elections it forms part of the Binley and Willenhall ward on Coventry City Council.

Wood End

Wood End in the north of Coventry, is a more deprived area than many other areas in Coventry.

Much of the housing stock was built in the 1950s and 60s and is of poor quality. Many of the homes are owned by the Whitefriars Housing Group, a housing trust which took over the running and management of Coventry's council houses several years ago. The estate has a poor reputation within the city with crime rates being higher than average.

In 2003, it was announced that Wood End, along with three other neighbouring districts, was to be redeveloped. The outline plans stated that much of the existing housing stock would be demolished and replaced with new homes to which tenants would be entitled to live. However, the project has been beset by delays and problems and as yet no deal for the redevelopment has been signed.

Wood End is surrounded by the districts of Bell Green, Alderman's Green, Potters Green and Henley Green. Further to the south is the Manor Farm estate which along with Henley Green and Deedmore, make up the four areas ear marked for redevelopment.

Holbrooks

Holbrooks is a residential area of Coventry, West Midlands, England. Holbrooks is also sometimes written as Holbrook's.

Most of the length of the four brooks which pass through the area, are covered or culverted, one culvert is adjacent to the recently built housing on Watery Lane. Another brook passes through and under the grounds of Parkgate School. The brooks then head off towards the river Sherbourne and the Sowe.

Holbooks is situated some three miles (5 km) north-west to the city centre, and was largely developed for private and council housing during the 1950s and to replace the many homes destroyed by air raids during the Second World War. Some areas are pre-war, Farm Close was built in the 1920s as local industry expanded. A lot of terraced houses were built in Holbrooks around the mid 1930s. One 1930s housing estates is locally known as 'The Dales', a somewhat tired housing estate close to the Ricoh Arena, and separated from it by a railway line and a main road, the A444 Phoenix Way.

Stoke Heath

Stoke Heath is a residential area of Coventry, West Midlands, England. It is situated approximately one mile to the northeast of the city centre. It borders Courthouse Green to the north, Wyken to the east and Stoke to the south with its western edge demarcated by the A444.

Earlsdon

Earlsdon electoral ward of Coventry, England. It lies approximately 1 mile to the southwest of Coventry City Centre, within the historic county boundaries of Warwickshire. It is the birth place of aviation pioneer Frank Whittle. There are shops and several restaurants on Earlsdon Street, the main street through Earlsdon. There is also Earlsdon Library, one of the larger branch libraries of Coventry library service. Earlsdon also hosts rugby, golf and tennis clubs. The area houses a number of students from nearby Coventry University and University of Warwick.

Foleshill

Foleshill is a suburb in the north of Coventry in the West Midlands of England. Longford. Courthouse Green and Rowley Green are to its north and Keresley is to its west.

Development of industries within the area such as the Ordnance Works, J&J Cash Ltd (silk ribbon weaving), and various brick works; was aided by the existence of the Coventry to Nuneaton railway and the Coventry Canal.

In July 1905, Courtaulds Ltd opened its factory in Foleshill and grew to become a world leader in the production of artificial fibres requiring a considerable expansion of the facility over the following years. The now-demolished Courtaulds chimney was reputed to be the tallest in England when it was erected in 1924. It stood 365 feet (111 m) tall, was built on 15 feet (4.5 m) - deep foundations, had a base diameter of 26 feet (8 m) tapering to 16 feet (5 m) at the top.

Jaguar Cars had a factory in the area in the 1930s and 1940s. Riley Cars were based in Foleshill from 1916 to 1948, when production was moved to the MG factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Royal Leamington Spa

Royal Leamington Spa, commonly known as Leamington Spa and Leamington or "Leam" to locals, is a spa town in central Warwickshire, England. Formerly known as Leamington Priors, its expansion began following the popularisation of the medicinal qualities of its water by Dr Kerr in 1784, and by Dr Lambe around 1797.During the 19th century, the town experienced one of the most rapid expansions in England.

It is the third largest town in the county after Nuneaton and Rugby. It is named after the River Leam which flows through the town.

Nuneaton railway station

Nuneaton railway station serves the large town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England. The station is managed by London Midland.

It is situated at the point where the Birmingham - Leicester route crosses the Trent Valley Line section of the West Coast Main Line 156 km (97 miles) north of London Euston, with a branch running to Coventry. It was known, during the period (1873–1964) when Nuneaton Abbey Street station was open, as Nuneaton Trent Valley, but it is now Nuneaton's only railway station.

he station was opened in 1847 when the London North Western Railway opened the Trent Valley section of the West Coast Main Line in order to avoid the congested areas of Coventry and Birmingham. A second station, Nuneaton Abbey Street, was opened in 1873 to link the nearby towns of Birmingham and Leicester and also to link Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Coalville via the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway in order to access the large coal reserves located there.

Towns close to nuneaton

Towns close to Nuneaton include Bedworth, Atherstone and Hinckley, with Tamworth and Lutterworth a little further afield. The nearest city is Coventry, sited 7 miles from the centre of Nuneaton. Leicester and thereafter Birmingham are considerably close. A local landmark is Mount Jud, which is a large mound of quarry waste that was formed when Judkins Quarry was dug out. Mount Jud lies in the northwest of the town and can be seen for miles around.
